How Comment Systems Destroy Your Core Web Vitals

Alex Rivera· April 5, 2026· 5 min read

Third-party comment scripts are some of the worst Core Web Vitals offenders. We measured 47 popular blogs. The results were worse than expected.

The Study

We ran Lighthouse on 47 tech blogs with over 100K monthly visitors. All used third-party comment systems (Disqus, Facebook Comments, or Commento).

The Results

MetricBefore CommentsAfter CommentsImpact
LCP1.8s3.2s+78%
FID45ms320ms+611%
CLS0.050.18+260%
Total Size450KB1.8MB+300%
Requests2367+191%

None of the sites passed Core Web Vitals after loading comments.

Why Comments Are So Destructive

  1. Render-blocking scripts - Disqus loads synchronously by default
  2. Layout shifts - Comment sections expand unpredictably
  3. Long tasks - Parsing 500KB+ of JavaScript blocks the main thread
  4. Network waterfalls - Comments trigger cascading requests to CDNs

The Business Impact

Google uses Core Web Vitals as a ranking signal. Poor scores mean less organic traffic.

We estimate the average site in our study loses 8-12% of potential organic traffic due to comment-related performance issues.

How Threadline Is Different

  • 12KB total - vs 500KB+ for Disqus
  • Async load - Never render-blocking
  • Shadow DOM - Zero layout shifts
  • No third-party requests - Everything loads from your CDN or ours
  • Lazy hydration - Comments load after above-the-fold content

The Fix

Switch to Threadline. Or any lightweight, async-comment system. Your Core Web Vitals (and your traffic) will thank you.
